SUMMARY:TU Berlin I Queen’s Lecture 2024
DESCRIPTION:Behind this term hides a series of lectures\, on the occasion of the visit of Queen Elisabeth II\, on the 27 May of 1965 in Berlin as a present of Great Britain towards the city of Berlin. Each year a renowned British scientist holds a speech regarding his area of expertise. Already one year later on the 26 May 1966 these series of lectures were started. \nMore than 20 years later\, on the 50th anniversary of refoundation of the Technische Hochschule Berlin as Technische Universität Berlin\, the British Minister Counsellor Rosemary Spencer announced the resumption of the lecture series. On the 1st of December 1997\, the Queen’s Lecture at the TU Berlin was continued. Since then\, the series of lectures – whether for economic\, cultural or scientific issues – have been an integral part of the cultural program of the TU Berlin. \nIn 2015\, the 50th anniversary year of the Queen’s Lecture\, it was a great honor for TU Berlin to welcome Queen Elizabeth II and her husband Prince Philip\, Duke of Edinburgh to our university to attend the ceremony commemorating “50 Years of the Queen’s Lecture”. The guests of honor included German Federal President Joachim Gauck\, German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Michael Müller\, Governing Mayor of Berlin. (Source: TU Berlin) \nPatient-ready AI can dramatically improve patient outcomes and reduce the burden on the healthcare system.  AI for health cannot be solved using off-the-shelf AI techniques and requires us to fundamentally revisit the problem to develop patient-ready solutions. This leads to new convergence science bringing together foundations of artificial and human intelligence\, medicine\, and regulation. \nProfessor Dr. Aldo Faisal is going to illustrate his approach with examples from his current research ranging from accelerating personalized drug development\, via the UK flagship AI Clinician program\, to national-scale digital health solutions\, that are overcoming challenges from neurology and pediatrics to infectious diseases and public health. \nAldo Faisal is director of science & innovation at the Alan Turing Institute and responsible for the Health Grand Challenge. He is professor of AI & neuroscience at Imperial College London and director of the “UKRI (UK Research and Innovation) Centre for Doctoral Training in AI for Healthcare.”  \nProfessor Aldo Faisal \nImperial College London \n“Human-AI Loops – Data-Driven Pathways to the Future of Healthcare”\non Wednesday\, 13 November 2024 at 17:00\nin the main auditorium (Audimax) at Technische Universität Berlin\nMain Building\, Straße des 17. SUMMARY:Semesterticket - Not Available For All Students
DESCRIPTION:Around 200\,000 students in Berlin will pay less for bus and train travel in the coming semester. Instead of 32.30 euros per month for Berlin ABC\, they will only have to pay 29.40 euros per month and can travel throughout the country with the Germany semester ticket. Provided they are studying full-time. \n“Some student groups are suddenly no longer entitled to a semester ticket\, even though they have always been\,” explain Erik and Eske\, who are responsible for ecology and environmental protection at the Asta of Humboldt-Universität (HU). Criticism has also come from the student representatives of the other two large Berlin universities\, the Asta of the Technical University (TU) and the Free University (FU). \nThe list of groups of people who\, unlike with the semester ticket\, do not receive a student discount with the Deutschlandticket is long. In addition to doctoral students\, the new regulation also affects students on certificate\, supplementary\, additional\, and postgraduate courses\, part-time students\, students on distance learning courses\, and students on leave of absence. \nAccording to the student representatives\, it is unfair that these groups are now being financially burdened. Many doctoral students have a temporary part-time employment contract. Some are not employed at all but are financing their doctorate with savings\, loans\, or scholarships. \nSeveral groups are excluded from the ticket \nKimberly Hartl is doing her doctorate at the HU and\, like the majority of her fellow students\, is dependent on a monthly ticket. “Ever since I enrolled\, I’ve used the semester ticket every day to travel to work or attend classes\,” she says. Hartl not only works at the Charité in Wedding but also at the Max Delbrück Center and sometimes has to travel to its main site in Buch. \nAs a result of the new regulations\, she has to get either the Jobticket for 34.30 euros per month\, the Deutschlandticket for 49 euros\, or the Umweltkarte for 71.40 euros from the Verkehrsverbund Berlin-Brandenburg (VBB). All of these options are more expensive than the Deutschland-Semesterticket\, and not all doctoral students are entitled to a job ticket. Hartl is also annoyed that she was not informed about the change in advance. She had inquired with the Asta early on but only received an official email from the HU on January 22. At that point\, she still had four weeks to come up with a solution and plan for the new costs. \nThe student representatives want to lobby the VBB to ensure that all enrolled students are once again entitled to the Germany-wide semester ticket. Negotiations with the transport associations are being conducted by the student committees. The HU-Asta reports that the VBB has not yet responded to the criticism. Gabriel Tiedje and Jehona Aliu from the TU-Asta also complain that the VBB does not respond enough to student interests. The current point of contention is at least being discussed. According to Tiedje\, however\, there is no prospect of any change for the coming semester\, as feedback is already being received and the ticket for the new semester will be paid for in advance with the tuition fees. The VBB responded evasively when asked. The association is in close contact with the universities regarding the Deutschland-Semesterticket. “Some of the universities’ interests can now be incorporated following joint consultation\, but not all wishes can be implemented\,” said a press spokeswoman. \nHartl hopes that a change will come soon. As a doctoral student representative at the Institute of Biology at HU\, she has now sent an open letter to the university management – in the hope that there will be a semester ticket for all students again for the next winter semester. \n© BVG\n[Source: Tagesspiegel ePaper by Ella Strübbe | Translated by Deeple]

SUMMARY:The Queen's Lecture 2023 @ TU Berlin
DESCRIPTION:“Constructing the world’s most incredible machines: Quantum Computers” – A Lecture by Winfried Hensinger of the University of Sussex on 8 November 2023 at 5 p.m.\nWhen:\nWednesday\, 8. November 2023 at 5 p.m. (doors open at 4.30 p.m.)\nWhere:\nTechnische Universität Berlin\, Main Building\, Audimax (H 0105)\, Straße des 17. Juni 135\, 10623 Berlin \nMaking use of strange phenomena of quantum physics\, such as “superposition” and “entanglement” (referred to by Einstein as “spooky”)\, it is possible to build computers that can solve important industry problems in a few hours\, that would require millions of years on even the fastest supercomputer. Such problems include optimising financial transactions\, creating new medicines\, making aircraft engines more fuel efficient\, simulate chemical reactions\, breaking codes but really span across nearly any industry sector. The realisation of practical quantum computers will likely change the world we work and live in. \nThe challenge to build practical quantum computers capable of solving such problems has been described as a holy grail in science. Current quantum computers can only operate with around 100 quantum bits while most industry applications would require millions of quantum bits. \nBy inventing a new method where voltages applied to a quantum computer microchip are used to implement calculations\, Hensinger’s group have managed to remove one of the biggest barriers traditionally faced to build a practical quantum computer using trapped charged atoms (ions)\, namely having to precisely align millions of laser beams to execute calculations with such a machine. \nA quantum computer needs to be modular as each microchip can only hold so many quantum bits. Prof. Hensinger’s group will announce the demonstration of a powerful new approach where quantum microchips are connected via electric field links\, allowing individual charged atoms to be transported from one chip to another. \nHensinger will discuss breakthroughs in research at the University of Sussex and work via quantum computing company Universal Quantum to construct practical quantum computers. \nThe event will be held in English. \nFurther information can be found here. \n© Stuart Robinson/University of Sussex\n

SUMMARY:CultureTrip: Berlin's history of protest
DESCRIPTION:Join the tour and find out what has moved the people of Berlin in the past \n\n\nDemonstrating has a long tradition in Berlin and besides the probably most prominent example of the fall of the Berlin Wall\, it is worth dedicating a separate city tour to Berlin’s protest history. For this CultureTrip we invite you to join a guided city walk which will teach us about the protest history of the last 170 years\, from suffrage walks to the peace movement to the present day. \n\nThe Kulturwerk Berlin of the studierendenWERK BERLIN regularly organizes a variety of excursions & tours for students during the lecture period. These activities are a great opportunity to discover new things together with other students at a reasonable price and to make contacts in the process. You can find all excursions in our event calendar under the tag “Excursion.” \nA binding registration for the CultureTrip is only possible for students of our partner universities. \nParticipation conditions. \nMore information can be found here.

SUMMARY:IKIGAI – Healthy and happy throughout study\, career and life
DESCRIPTION:Discover your inner compass! \n“The two most important days in your life are the day you are born and the day you find out why.” – Mark Twain \nDiscover your inner compass – and with it\, greater health and happiness in your studies\, career\, and life. \nBut how can you “discover” your inner compass? \nOne method of tracking it down is called IKIGAI and comes from Japan.\nIKIGAI is usually translated as: “The reason for being” or “What is worth getting up for in the morning”. \nThe workshop offers you\, especially in these times of upheaval an opportunity to deal with your own purpose/meaning.\nWe are currently in a situation where our personal issues\, our environment\, and our systems are showing up and changing more. \n \nThe workshop consists of two 4-hour blocks. \nAt the end of the first block\, you will have worked out and formulated your very own IKIGAI.\nIn the second block\, we will concentrate on taking a closer look at this treasure\, polishing it and putting it on the way\, or anchoring it in your own life\, work\, and environment.\nAt the end of the day\, you will have something at hand that will help you to further focus on your studies\, your job\, and your life. \nResponsible: Thomas Dönnebrink \nLanguage: English \nPreparation:\nFind a quiet place for this day where you have a good internet connection and are completely undisturbed in order to be able to concentrate on yourself and your IKIGAI.\nHave white sheets of paper and a black or blue and a red pen ready. \nRegistration:\nRegistration is done online. The registration period starts 3 weeks before the workshop date. More information is available here.
